MEET THE ARTISAN | November Edition
JAKE OLIVEIRA

If you’ve walked through the showroom recently, you’ve probably stopped in front of one of Jake Oliveira’s pieces without realizing it. His work doesn’t announce itself, it just quietly pulls you in.

Jake, who runs his Toronto-based studio, designs for several of the lines we represent, including Boyd Lighting, where his latest piece, the Strata Mirror, has become an instant favorite. It’s the kind of design that changes the mood of a room without trying too hard. The geometry is strong, but the hand-worked brass softens it in all the right ways.

That’s Jake’s gift: balance. His Nest Collection captures light like it’s alive. The Botero Lounge Chair wraps you in sculptural comfort. And Strata, the newest addition to the floor, brings architecture and intimacy together in one simple gesture.

His work gives designers something rare these days: pieces that spark emotion and anchor a space at the same time.

If you’re looking for design that makes an impression without making a scene, take a closer look at Jake’s pieces on your next visit or explore them below

Strata Mirror

Designed for Boyd Lighting

"Strata started with a simple question. What happens if a mirror becomes part of the architecture instead of a flat surface on the wall? I drew the geometry by hand, so it carries some human irregularity. Nothing is perfectly symmetrical, and that was the point. You can feel the hand in the line. The brass frame acts like a gesture that guides you around the reflection. I wanted the piece to feel precise but not rigid, structured but still alive. That tension is what makes it interesting to me."

Nest Collection

Designed for Boyd Lighting

"With Nest, I was exploring the idea of layers and how materials can hold light rather than project it. The outer shade is tinted glass. The inner one is opaline. When they overlap, they create this subtle push and pull between shadow and glow. It is quiet, but it changes the atmosphere of a room instantly. I am always chasing that feeling. Lighting should shape the mood of a space without overpowering it."

Botero Lounge Chair

Designed for Powell and Bonnell

"Botero is really about generosity. I wanted a chair that feels sculptural but still completely comfortable. I drew the curves in one continuous line so the form wraps around you in a very natural way. The legs clasp the seat almost like a stem holding a petal. It is structural, but also gentle. I like when furniture carries both strength and softness. It makes the piece feel grounded but still welcoming."

Fundy Table

Designed for Powell and Bonnell

"Fundy came straight from memory. I grew up visiting the Bay of Fundy, and I never forgot the way the tides carve into the rock. I started sketching forms that felt shaped by nature rather than by tools. The cutouts in the base came from that idea. They are like natural voids formed by water over time. I wanted the table to feel solid, but also shaped by movement. That balance of permanence and change is something I am always trying to capture."

A Final Thought

"I care about how people live with design, not just how they look at it. A piece should have presence, but it should also have humility. It should invite touch and spark a small moment of reflection. When design becomes part of someone’s everyday life, that is when it feels successful to me."
